5 Letter to Grand Mother when Grand Father Died

Kingsthorpe

22nd August 192?

Dear Mrs Laidlaw,

I don’t need to tell you how much Mrs Fletcher & I regretted to see the news of the great loss you all had sustained in the loss of your dear husband & their father. No one but those who have gone through it can have any idea what it is, but we can offer you our own sincere sympathy which Mrs Fletcher & I do most certainly. The healing of the wound can only be left in the hands of God and time.

Your boys now have a duty to face which I’m sure they will faithfully carry out. Your elder son, I did not know very well, but I can assure you Arthur was one of the finest lads I have ever had to pass through my hands, and feel sure he will grow up to be a great comfort & help to you. To him I would say do your duty. My brother and I had to do it many years ago & I can tell Arthur it will be a great joy to him to know he has done his duty & returned a little of the love & care his parents have bestowed on him. Some day we hope to meet you again & then find Arthur has grown into the man I expect him too. Again offering our sincerest sumpathy.

I remain

Yrs sincerely

Wm Fletcher
